Discovery in the field
According to information provided by the president of the Association, Jacek Ukowski, the farmer who had this stroke of luck contacted them after losing a part of his plow during fieldwork. During the land search, at a depth of about 10 centimeters, a silver coin weighing over 27 grams and with a diameter of 4 centimeters was found. This coin, as it turned out, was a Renaissance thaler minted by the brothers, co-regents of the Duchy of Saxony.
History in hand
The coin, handed over to the Museum of the History of Kamień Land in Kamień Pomorski, is an extraordinary relic that brings the region's history to life. The museum director, Grzegorz Kurka, describing the find, emphasized that the coins depict the figures of two co-regents, Dukes Frederick William I and John II, who co-ruled Saxony from 1575 to 1603. These figures are meticulously crafted, with clear details of their attire and weaponry.
Mysterious past
However, despite the wealth of information about the prominent figures depicted on the coin, many mysteries remain about how and why the coin ended up in the area of Duniewo. One theory suggests that the coin may have been lost by a traveler who stopped in the area to rest or water the horses. This is another discovery by the St. Cordula Association, which in the past has unearthed finds such as papal bulls, casting new light on the history and heritage of these lands.
